School Hours:

From 8.30am (after a bell) children are able to enter classrooms and prepare for their day ahead.

    • 8.30am Children may enter clockrooms and class rooms
    • 8.55am First school bell - farewell parents and begin reflection and preparation time

    • 10.30-10.50 Morning break

Please note that punctuality is strongly encouraged. children need to be at school by 8.50am if they are to be organised and ready to begin at 9.00am. We start with class prayer and it is important that this is not interrupted.

Absences:

The school requires a telephone call from parents/caregivers, prior to 9.00am on any day on which a child will be absent from school. This information is recorded in the office absence book which is sent around to classrooms at 9.15am. If a child is absent from the classroom, but no message has been received, the office secretary will call to check your child's wellbeing.

Please call in every day that the child is absent or indicate the likely length of absence when you first call. The school also appreciates receiving a call if, for any reason your child is going to be late for school on any particular day.

If a child is going to be away from school for a period of time, a letter detailing the time, and reason for absence in the form of a request is required by the Ministry of Education, addressed to the school Principal. prior to the child being absent from school.

Accidents and Illness:

If a child has an accident or becomes ill at school we try to contact the parent(s) as soon as possible. If we are unable to make contact we use the emergency number you have provided for our records. If we are unable to make contact with anyone, the school reserves the right to seek medical treatment, if necessary, at the Christchurch South Medical Centre.

Please Note: teachers are unable to administer medications at school. If medication is required to be administered during the day we require you to fill in a medication authorisation form in the office. First aid is administered by our Secretary. Allergy and asthma medications authority forms are available at the office also and will be stored securely.

Family Information:

Each year parents/caregivers will receive a request to fill in a form with address and phone contact details for both parents, caregivers familys. Please include your names, contact residential and mobile phone numbers and where possible a work number. It is important that we have a correct email address also and this is how class teachers will communicate with you. We also requrest that you nominate 2 'emergency contact' people that may be available when you are not. All details held are strictly confidential.

Money - procedures for bringing to school:

All money is handled by the office (unless stated in the notice) and it would be appreciated it the following proceedures could be observed:

  1. the money/cheque must be in an envelope
  2. Cash should be for the exact amount required
  3. Cheques should be made payable to St Peters Catholic School, unless otherwise directed.
  4. Money envelopes should be put into the drop box at the office door before the start of school as the office closes at 3.00pm.
  5. On the envelope please write the following:
  • the child's name and room number
  • the amount enclosed
  • what the money is for

Homework:

Homework provides an opportunity for parents to share with their child some of the work being done at school. Your child's teacher will inform you of the homework policy operating in that room.

Library:

The school has a library which the children use as class groups and at other times. Please ensure books borrowed are well cared for, a book bag is an excellent idea, and returned promptly. Unaccounted for books taken out by individual children at the year end will be invoiced.

Parent Help:

Classroom assistance is welcomed and appreciated. Please check with class teachers for further details. Periodically classes are involved in educational visits. It is our policy to involve parents in these trips so they may share some of the pleasures associated with giving children the opportunity to learn outside the classroom.

Educational Services:

At times it is necessary to involve specialist services fron the fields of health, behaviour and education. Some come on a regular basis as part of the service to schools. the following is a list of those services:

  • RTLB - Resource Teacher learning Behaviour
  • Hearing and Vision Specialists
  • Psycological Service
  • Public Health Nurse
  • Speech Therapist
  • Visiting Teacher
  • Guidance Unit

As a parent you may request any of the above services by contacting the school. In all cases the parents and school are kept fully informed.

Dental Care:

The children's teeth are checked regularly by the school dental therapist. Treatment is at the Thorrington School Dental Clinic. Phone: 3320600

Stationery:

The stationery list will be issued to New Entrants at Pre-entry and other students at the beginning of each school year.

Reporting to Parents:

Informal Reporting - In our experience informal reporting or discussion has proved helpful. These discussions are usually held at the request of parents or the school at any time during the year. Early intervention is best. Where concerns can be addressed early on, systems can be put in place for the children to deal with these. Any concerns should first be discussed with the class teacher at a mutually agreed time.

Formal Reporting - Meet the teacher. Parents have the opportunity to meet the teacher in a group setting to learn about the years expectations in this teachers class. Mid-Year Interviews - These are held during term 2. These are arranged on an appointment basis.

Sports and Cultural Groups:

  • Chess Team: Meet on a Wednesday after school.
  • Basketball Team: TBA
  • Cricket Team:
